The Russell Brand Show prank telephone calls row

''The Russell Brand Show'' hoax (aka "prank") telephone calls row, sometimes referred to as "Sachsgate", followed a series of voice messages left by comedian Russell Brand and TV presenter Jonathan Ross on the answering machine of actor Andrew Sachs. It followed a BBC Radio 2 decision to allow an episode of ''The Russell Brand Show'', recorded earlier in the week due to Brand's other work commitments, to be broadcast on Saturday 18 October 2008. On the episode, Brand and Ross called Sachs as a guest to interview on-air; when Sachs failed to answer the telephone, they are heard leaving a series of lewd messages on his answering machine, including comments about Brand's relationship with Sachs' granddaughter, Georgina Baillie—at the time a performer with the group Satanic Sluts.
After little attention, an article in ''The Mail on Sunday'' on 26 October 2008 about the show led to a record number of complaints and criticism of Brand, Ross and the editorial decisions of the BBC. The two presenters were criticised by a number of members of Parliament, including Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Following the complaints, Ross was suspended from the BBC while both the BBC and Ofcom launched investigations. Both Brand and Lesley Douglas, Controller of Radio 2, resigned from the BBC. Ross was suspended without pay for 12 weeks on 30 October. The BBC was fined £150,000 by Ofcom.
==Background==
From April 2006 through to October 2008, Russell Brand presented the weekly BBC radio show ''The Russell Brand Show''. In almost every show Brand was joined by his co-host Matt Morgan who would often steer him in certain directions regarding what to talk about. Brand sometimes called in a variety of his celebrity friends as well, including Noel Gallagher, Alan Carr and Jonathan Ross, to talk on the show each week.
On 11 October 2008, David Baddiel co-hosted Brand's radio show. Baddiel recalled having met Georgina Baillie at Brand's home and being told that her grandfather was actor Andrew Sachs. According to Baddiel, Baillie said "Don't tell him I was here!"
